Emanuelle, Queen of the Desert

For the first few minutes this looks like it might be quite a good example of its type, as Laura Gemser wanders around in various states of undress and doesn't ruin thing by attempting to act :-)

What's odd, however, is that none of the shots seem to belong together or attempting to tell any sort of story.

Then the film actually starts and you realise they are flashbacks/forwards padding out the running time and showcase the scenes with Gemser – scenes that soon prove to be few and far between, most notably through an extended flashback that results in her absence for about half the film's running time.

Yes, it's another low-budget Italian co-production that trades on her presence and that of husband Gabriele Tinti to pass itself off as a Black Emanuelle film. But the original title, La Belva dalle calda pelle The Wild Animal in the Warm Skin – made no reference to the character, with Gemser instead playing someone named Sheila; at least in the English dub I watched.

The other English language title, The Dirty Seven , is probably more accurate as the story itself is a fairly typical action/revenge potboiler.

A group of mercenaries are hired to do a job, then betrayed by their employer, the gunboat that they are supposed to rendezvous with using said guns against them. The survivors, some wounded and all low on water, head across the wastes, doing various nasty things to the local populace en route.

Then Gemser shows up as a kind of trash movie Manon de Sources, an avenging angel/spirit of the desert…
