Site information
Kinocite was started by K H Brown in late 2002, after he started to feel he wanted to do things a bit different from a website he had been contributing to previously, iofilm.co.uk.
The site runs on a variety of
free/open source
programs.
MySQL provides the site database.
The process of creating pages is largely automated, using a combination
of Perl and Ruby scripts running at regularly
scheduled intervals. These scripts output PHP pages. The actual content of a review
or article is static, to make the process of indexing pages easier and
to lessen the load on the database, with PHP being used as a more
powerful alternative to Server Side Includes.
A full text search of the site was formerly provided by Swish-e. Now we're just doing an inverted index search on the article contents in the database itself via our own code. .
The look of the site is deliberately kept low tech and text based. The
webmaster is no good with graphics, doesn't have a decent scanner and
thinks 95% per cent of graphics seen on the web are pretty much
irrelevant. That's his opinion and he's sticking to it :-)
Site hosting is by Launchsite.
Thanks to George for
help with the logo graphic, Jonathan for helping sourcing DVDs and the rest of the Filmsoc
gang for being...
